2024 Year in Review

By Doug Carlson on September 9, 2025

The Lookout Valley Greenway Alliance (LVGA) continued to build momentum in 2024 advocating for a “linear park” connecting the valley with the rest of Chattanooga.  Below are a few highlights.

National Park Service – Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance program (NPS-RTCA) Grant

In June we were notified that we received the RTCA Grant through the National Park Service for assistance with planning and outreach via services from a landscape architect.  The additional resource has helped us reach additional stakeholders and develop a more cohesive message.

Historical Hikes of Cummings Bottom with Jim Ogden

February & November – National Parks Ranger and Historian, Jim Ogden, led a group of residents on a hike through Cummings Bottom NPS property.  The goal was to highlight the historical significance of the area and show a potential route for a greenway connection between Lookout Valley and the rest of Chattanooga.

Reflection Riding becomes a Strong Partner

With the possibility of creating a greenway connection to Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center, the organization has stepped up their involvement in the LVGA project and provided both guidance and meeting space, which has been much appreciated.

Stakeholder Meetings – Various Dates

Throughout the year we continued to meet with potential stakeholders in and around the Chattanooga region, advocate to prioritize the greenway amongst city planners, and learn from pioneers of various greenway initiatives.

Upcoming Activities

In 2025 we plan to stay active, focusing on the following activities:

  • Scheduling additional events at the Cummings Bottom NPS property
  • Securing funding for a feasibility study focusing on a greenway connection between Reflection Riding and the existing Riverwalk
  • Advocate to include multimodal pathway within the I-24 widening project at the base of Lookout Mountain
  • Investigate potential improvements in and around the Cummings Bottom Park property

Please let us know if you have any thoughts, ideas or suggestions for additional events or activities.  We would love to hear from you!
