2023 Year in Review

By Doug Carlson on January 12, 2024

The Lookout Valley Greenway Alliance (LVGA) has stayed busy over the last year advocating for a greenway system in the valley along with a connection to the rest of Chattanooga.  We wanted to provide a brief review of what we’ve been up to, and let you know what’s on the horizon.

Community Outreach

Lookout Wild Film Festival – January 2023

We set up an advocacy table at the festival on Saturday and enjoyed talking with many of the attendees

Participated in the Lookout Valley Lion’s Club trash/litter pick-up – April 2023

Historic Hike with City and Nonprofit Leadership – May 2023

National Parks Ranger and Historian, Jim Ogden, led a group of city and nonprofit leaders on a 2 mile hike through historical Parker Lane, a hidden gem of greenspace in Lookout Valley.  The goal was to highlight the historical significance of the area and show a potential route for a greenway connection between Lookout Valley and the rest of Chattanooga.

Visioning Walk with Reflection Riding and SORBA – December 2023

In December we enjoyed another walk through the Parker Lane property, joined by the SORBA president and Reflection Riding CEO, to brainstorm improvements that could potential be made to create a space that residents and visitors would enjoy.

Stakeholder Meetings – Various Dates

Throughout the year we continued to meet with potential stakeholders in and around the Chattanooga region, advocate to prioritize the greenway amongst city planners, and learn from pioneers of various greenway initiatives.  This included the Thrive Regional Partnership National Treasures Alliance group and White Oak Bicycle Co-Op.

Upcoming Activities

In 2024 we plan to stay active, focusing on the following activities:

  • Scheduling another “Parker Lane Historic Walk” along with a separate “Clean Up Day”
  • Submit an application for the National Park Service – Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance program (NPS-RTCA). NPS-RTCA assists communities and public land managers in developing or restoring parks, conservation areas, rivers, and wildlife habitats, as well as creating outdoor recreation opportunities and programs that engage future generations in the outdoors.
  • Secure funding for a feasibility study focusing on a greenway connection between Reflection Riding and the existing Riverwalk
  • Create an updated drone video that more effectively shows the potential greenway locations

Please let us know if you have any thoughts, ideas or suggestions for additional events or activities.  We would love to hear from you!
